About the Farm

The Center for Racehorse Retraining was founded by Kate Anderson in 2016 with the mission of providing off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) a natural and holistic transition into their next chapter. By prioritizing movement, social interaction, and a low-stress environment, we have seen remarkable transformations in the horses we care for.

To date, CRR has successfully rehomed over 200 OTTBs, matching them with careers and homes that suit their individual needs. In addition, we have provided a permanent sanctuary for more than 30 horses who require lifelong care. Our approach is rooted in progressive, evidence-based horsemanship, combining practical experience with research-driven insights to improve equine well-being.

What Is Classical Dressage?

Classical dressage is a slow, progressive method of training that focuses on building the balance, suppleness, and strength of the horse. Our goal is to work within the horse’s physical and mental abilities.

Our horses spend time working in-hand as they learn how to carry themselves in a new balance as compared to their racing form. This also teaches them about the aids in a low stress way.

Under saddle, much of the work is performed at a walk to develop balance and relaxation prior to adding impulsion. This slow foundation sets the horse’s foundation up for consistent progress with as little physical and mental stress as possible. The horses become quiet, relaxed and confident in their new careers.

Our Values

We believe that every horse is unique, and our approach reflects this philosophy. The CRR team carefully assesses each horse’s physical and mental needs, tailoring their retraining and rehabilitation plan to ensure they thrive. Our program prioritizes a natural, low-stress environment, where horses have the time and space to decompress, regain confidence, and transition smoothly into their next chapter.

By combining expert care, patience, and a deep understanding of equine behavior, we set each horse up for long-term success—whether they go on to excel in a new discipline or simply enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Through education, outreach, and strong partnerships, we are committed to not only changing the lives of these horses but also shaping the future of responsible Thoroughbred aftercare.

Our Facilities

Located on just over 2,500 acres of Wyoming prairie, the Center for Racehorse Retraining is proud to offer the horses in our care a unique and peaceful lifestyle.

Our herd of Thoroughbreds—along with a handful of other breeds—has the freedom to roam, graze, and interact naturally across open pastures, choosing how they utilize their space.

Through years of observation, we have found that movement, social interaction, and a natural diet are essential for every horse, regardless of breed or discipline. Providing ample space, minimizing stress, and allowing for natural foraging have led to significant improvements in hoof health, body soreness, back pain, metabolism, and behavior.

This philosophy has become the foundation of our program, shaping how we care for and rehabilitate each horse.

Under the watchful care of owner Kate Anderson and her family, our horses receive dedicated attention, whether they are right by the gate or miles across the prairie. The land they inhabit is a vital part of their letdown and rehabilitation process, giving them the opportunity to transition at their own pace.
